Existential Risk Workshop
Date: 16 - 17 July 2008
Speaker(s): Nick Bostrom, Anders Sandberg, Toby Ord, and Rafaela Hillerbrand
Venue: St Benet’s Hall, Oxford
On 16 and 17 July 2008, the Future of Humanity Institute hosted a workshop on existential risks which preceded the Global Catastrophic Risks Conference. After a debate about how individual risks should be ranked in terms of their likelihood of occurrence, participants focused on ways of thinking about different types of risks. Specifically, they discussed how existential risks might best be categorised. Participants also discussed the problem of creating a successful academic community of existential risks experts, and also how this community could most effectively communicate its findings to policy makers.
