Peter Singer is an Australian philosopher and professor at Princeton University. His book Animal Liberation is widely regarded as the touchstone of the animal liberation movement and he has written and spoken extensively about our obligations to the world's poor (www.thelifeyoucansave.com).
Toby Ord is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Balliol. In 2009 he founded the organisation Giving What We Can which encourages people to give a significant proportion of their income to those charities that are the most cost-effective at fighting global poverty (www.givingwhatwecan.org). Ord is a highly sought after figure in the media following the launch of his charity 'Giving What We Can‘ in November 2009. 'Giving What We Can‘ is an international society dedicated to eliminating poverty in the developing world. Its members are united in the belief that global poverty is one of the most important problems in the world today, and have taken the 'Pledge to Give' at least 10% of their incomes to help relieve suffering in the developing world, giving the money to wherever it can achieve the most to fight global poverty. The society also conducts research into which charities and organizations are most cost-effective in fighting poverty in order to help inform both its members and the general public. Renowned philosophers Peter Singer and Thomas Pogge have been well known for giving a significant fraction of their incomes and were quick to sign up as members. in the field of ethics. The charitable society now has 128 members who have pledged a combined $36 million. This is enough money to save between 40,000 and 200,000 lives if spent on the most cost-effective charities (for example TB medical treatment). This is a tripling of the number of members (200% growth) over the last year.
All welcome.
