Patrick is a philosopher of mind and cognitive science. His current research is on desire and agency in AI, especially in connection with reinforcement learning. This research concerns both what it would take for an artificial system to have desires of its own, and what the implications would be for the system’s moral status. Patrick’s PhD in philosophy is from King’s College London.
