In December, the Future of Humanity Institute (FHI) hosted a workshop on “AI Safety and Blockchain.”

The workshop brought together renowned experts in blockchain and AI safety. Attendees included: Nick Bostrom, Founding Director of FHI; Vitalik Buterin, the inventor of Ethereum; Jaan Tallinn, a founding engineer of Skype and Kazaa; Wei Dai, the creator of b-money and Crypto++; Gwern Branwen, dark net markets researcher; and Allan Dafoe, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Yale University.

The workshop explored the potential technical overlap between AI Safety and blockchain technologies and the possibilities for using blockchain, crypto-economics, and cryptocurrencies to facilitate greater global coordination. Key topics of discussion were the coordination of political actors, AI strategy and policy, blockchain frontiers and trends, prediction markets, coordination failures, and the potential impact of blockchain on governance.
